Put down that yoghurt! Popular “health food” is making us fat!

Thank you, Nick Triggle, for raising awareness of an important dietary distinction. The BBC health correspondent recently penned an article detailing how the best of intentions can bring about the most disastrous results. Yoghurt, Mr. Triggle shows us, is a perfect example.

We’ve been told for years that yoghurt is good for us. And it is, in its natural full-fat form. But take a look at the yoghurt in your fridge. Chances are it’s neither natural nor full fat. Chances are it’s highly processed, artificially flavored, and heavily sweetened. And it likely has very little if any viable probiotics—the beneficial bacteria that make Yoghurt so naturally good for you.

The English spend more on yoghurt than they do on crips and bacon—a sign that we’re at least trying to eat healthier. But the bestselling brands can contain up to 30g of sugar. That’s nearly the recommended daily intake for a young person in just one serving! Is it any wonder that the UK obesity rate is soaring, especially among the young?

Worldwide, experts predict 1 in 5 of us will be obese by the year 2025. The time to take action is now!

Yoghurt—the right kind of yoghurt—is good for us. Just make sure you buy the natural stuff without added sweeteners (natural or synthetic) and none of that fancy stuff like fruit blended in or crunchies in the side cup. Add your own berries, honey or cereal if you want to liven things up.

If it’s the probiotics you’re after—the “friendly bugs” that nourish your immune system, aid digestion and may even influence your mood and behavior—supplements can be a more efficient solution. You can find comprehensive blends like Dr. Stephen Langer’s Ultimate 16-Strain Probiotic or individual strains selected for specific applications, like L. Plantarum for lower GI support or L. Rhamnosus for special support while traveling.

Public officials will continue to warn us of the dangers affecting our health. It’s up to us to head the warnings and make the right choices to protect our health and that of future generations. Heavily sweetened, processed frankenfoods masquerading as health food is not the answer. Keep it simple. Keep it natural. And keep fighting for a healthier future!
