What should we know about homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a type of medical philosophy. Its basic idea is that the human body has the ability to heal itself. Homeopathic treatment is not a product of modernity, as maybe many of you think. Its beginning was set as far back as the XVIII century in Germany by the German doctor Samuel Hahnemann. The word “homeopathy” is Greek in origin – “homoios” means “similar” in Greek, and “pathos” means “compassion”. Actually the Law of Similars was described even earlier by Hippocrates and Paracelsus and was adopted by many world cultures, including Mayans, Chinese, Greeks, etc. Homeopathy considers the symptoms of a disease to be normal reactions of the body through which the organism tries to fight on its own and regain its health.

Homeopathy is based on the idea that “similar cures similar”. This means that if a certain substance causes a healthy person to get sick, we can cure him/her by giving him/her a small dose of the same substance. In other words, homeopathic remedies stimulate the natural recovery processes in the human body.

The homeopathy doctor (homeopath) treats by using pills or liquid mixtures (solutions) which contain a very small amount of the active substance (usually of a plant or mineral origin). They are also known as strongly diluted or “potential” substances.

What is homeopathy used for?

From a historical point of view, people used homeopathy for many years mostly for treatment of a wide range of diseases, such as allergies, atopic dermatitis, rheumatoid arthritis, etc. Homeopathy was also successfully used for treatment of minor injuries, such as cuts, abrasions, muscle pains and spasms. Homeopathic treatment is not recommended for cancer, cardio-vascular diseases, strong infections, as well as for conditions defined as emergencies.

Is homeopathy harmless?

Homeopathic remedies are regulated in the USA and Europe and are considered completely safe.

It’s essential for you to inform your physician, if you’ve decided to undergo homeopathic treatment. Homeopathic remedies should not substitute conventional drugs when it comes to serious health problems.
