Put down that yoghurt! Popular “health food” is making us fat!

Thank you, Nick Triggle, for raising awareness of an important dietary distinction. The BBC health correspondent recently penned an article detailing how the best of intentions can bring about the most disastrous results. Yoghurt, Mr. Triggle shows us, is a perfect example.

We’ve been told for years that yoghurt is good for us. And it is, in its natural full-fat form. But take a look at the yoghurt in your fridge. Chances are it’s neither natural nor full fat. Chances are it’s highly processed, artificially flavored, and heavily sweetened. And it likely has very little if any viable probiotics—the beneficial bacteria that make Yoghurt so naturally good for you.

The English spend more on yoghurt than they do on crips and bacon—a sign that we’re at least trying to eat healthier. But the bestselling brands can contain up to 30g of sugar. That’s nearly the recommended daily intake for a young person in just one serving! Is it any wonder that the UK obesity rate is soaring, especially among the young?

Worldwide, experts predict 1 in 5 of us will be obese by the year 2025. The time to take action is now!

Yoghurt—the right kind of yoghurt—is good for us. Just make sure you buy the natural stuff without added sweeteners (natural or synthetic) and none of that fancy stuff like fruit blended in or crunchies in the side cup. Add your own berries, honey or cereal if you want to liven things up.

If it’s the probiotics you’re after—the “friendly bugs” that nourish your immune system, aid digestion and may even influence your mood and behavior—supplements can be a more efficient solution. You can find comprehensive blends like Dr. Stephen Langer’s Ultimate 16-Strain Probiotic or individual strains selected for specific applications, like L. Plantarum for lower GI support or L. Rhamnosus for special support while traveling.

Public officials will continue to warn us of the dangers affecting our health. It’s up to us to head the warnings and make the right choices to protect our health and that of future generations. Heavily sweetened, processed frankenfoods masquerading as health food is not the answer. Keep it simple. Keep it natural. And keep fighting for a healthier future!

you are right. I am from Bulgaria, the country that invented the yoghurt. Actually, in our country this product is not called "yoghurt" but "sоur milk" and contains the bacteria called Lactobacillus bulgaricus. This is the only true and pure "yoghurt" that I know. The taste is slightly sour and on top of the substance after 1-2 days there must be light liquid which is very healthy and must not be discarded. As a fact of curiosity, Japan is the only other country in the world which produces sour milk very similar to the one we have in Bulgaria. That's because they use the same bacteria mentioned above (under licence) and live happily 100 years! :)

Glad to read something that point out things like they really are. But with likes of Kardashians full time promoting junk '' healthy'' shakes and millions empty headed following them. Chances for really natural unprocessed and healthy food in gratly damaged.

That's undoubtedly rubbish. Youghart is not just one of the best health foods, it is a must. First off, your body needs to have a healthy amount of ''good'' bacteria in the digestive tract, and many yogurts are made using active, good bacteria. One of the words you’ll be hearing more of in relation to yogurt is ''probiotics.'' Probiotic,(from Greek Προβιοτικά) which literally means ''pro life,'' refers to living organisms that can result in a health benefit when eaten in adequate amounts. Miguel Freitas, PhD, medical marketing manager for Dannon Co., says the benefits associated with probiotics are specific to certain strains of these "good" bacteria. Many provide their benefits by adjusting the microflora (the natural balance of organisms) in the intestines, or by acting directly on body functions, such as digestion or immune function. (Keep in mind that the only yogurts that contain probiotics are those that say "live and active cultures" on the label.) And let us not forget that yogurt comes from milk. So yogurt eaters will also get a dose of animal protein (about 9 grams per 6-ounce serving), plus several other nutrients found in dairy foods, like calcium, vitamin B-2, B-12, potassium, and magnesium. In fact, the health benefits of yogurt are so impressive that many health-conscious people make it a daily habit. Here are five possible health benefits of having a yogurt a day: Benefit No. 1: Yogurt May Help Prevent Osteoporosis ''Adequate nutrition plays a major role in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, and the micronutrients of greatest importance are calcium and vitamin D,'' says Jeri Nieves, PhD, MS, director of bone density testing at New York’s Helen Hayes Hospital. Calcium has been shown to have beneficial effects on bone mass in people of all ages, although the results are not always consistent, says Nieves, also an assistant professor of clinical epidemiology at Columbia University. The combination of calcium and vitamin D has a clear skeletal benefit, provided the dose of vitamin D is sufficiently high,'' she adds. Yogurt May Reduce the Risk of High Blood Pressure A recent study, which followed more than 5,000 Spanish university graduates for about two years, found a link between dairy intake and risk of high blood pressure. Yogurt With Active Cultures Helps the Gut Yogurt with active cultures may help certain gastrointestinal conditions, including: Lactose intolerance Constipation Diarrhea Colon cancer Inflammatory bowel disease H. pylori infection Yogurt With Active Cultures May Discourage Vaginal Infections Yogurt May Help You Feel Fuller A study from the University of Washington in Seattle tested hunger, fullness, and calories eaten at the next meal on 16 men and 16 women who had a 200-calorie snack. The snack was either: Semisolid yogurt containing pieces of peach and eaten with a spoon The same yogurt in drinkable form A peach-flavored dairy beverage Peach juice Although those who had the yogurt snacks did not eat fewer calories at the next meal, both types of yogurt resulted in lower hunger ratings and higher fullness ratings than either of the other snacks. I eat only original goat yogurt, with all it's probiotics. The best "medicine" if you suffer from colitis ;-)

maybe the idea of the article is good and "healthy". But, by putting the penultimate paragraph in, you've destroyed whole article to the pure advertisement. Well, you should just mention: "if you’re after—the “friendly bugs”, visit your local pharmacy and ask for a natural probiotics".

I think you are serious. As a physician I can confirm that processed yoghurt got quite far from the original idea. if you want fresh good yoghurt try Greek, Bulgarian or Romanian, made out of plain milk from sheep, goat or buffalo. That one is not falling down from your spoon and keeps you fed for hours. As for our friend Joe, keep on with soda and fast food; you will benefit from your own advice!
