What is Melatonin?
Melatonin is a natural hormone that is produced in the brain by the pineal gland. It regulates the natural cycle of sleep - waking . In the evening, when sunlight begins to diminish, the pineal gland gradually releases melatonin, which prepares the body for sleep. Melatonin is available in the form of a nutritional supplement that has the same qualities as the natural substance produced by the human body.

How does Melatonin work?
The main property of melatonin is to regulate the sleep-wake cycle . When it gets dark, our body begins to synthesize more melatonin, which is a signal that we need to get ready for sleep. Light reduces the production of melatonin and sets our body up for awakening. People who fall asleep and have poor sleep have been found to have low levels of melatonin. Therefore, its intake facilitates sleep and promotes a restful and uninterrupted sleep at night.  Melatonin production also declines significantly with advancing age, especially after the age of 40. This may be one of the reasons why older people fall asleep. Melatonin supplements compensate for these deficiencies and supplement the natural production of this hormone by the body, helping to make it easier to fall asleep and improve sleep quality.

Why is Melatonin Important?
Melatonin can regulate body temperature, blood pressure and hormonal levels in the body. Melatonin also binds to receptors in your body to help relax and relieve tension. Melatonin is a powerful antioxidant that can maintain eye health and reduce the risk of developing eye diseases. It reduces acid reflux and helps to heal the gastric mucosa, especially when irritation is caused by the H. pylori bacterium. Melatonin can also reduce the symptoms of tinnitus and thus also help ease nighttime sleep.      Take melatonin as a dietary supplement if you have the following symptoms:
• Sleep difficulties
• Disturbed sleep cycle – waking
• Restless sleep at night
• Insomnia
• Impaired ability to concentrate

What is the recommended dose of Melatonin?
The recommended dose may vary between 1 mg and 10 mg per day depending on sleep problems.
