L-lysine is an essential amino acid which means it can’t be produced by the body and has to be taken with food or a dietary supplement. Lysine is necessary for the production of all the protein in the body, including hormones, enzymes and antibodies, as well as carnitine and collagen, which is a structural protein forming the entire connective tissue such as skin, sinews and bones. L-lysine also plays an important part in the absorption of calcium. Some evidence shows that supplements with L-lysine may help the immune system, as well as the normal cardiovascular function.
